Why it happens

What smog does to the nose and throat.

The nose filters and warms the air we breathe. Fine smoke particles and cold, dry air irritate its lining and the throat, so they swell and produce more mucus. People with allergy, asthma, chronic sinusitis, a deviated septum or a smoking habit usually feel it first and most.

Common in this season

Blocked or runny nose, sneezing, a scratchy or sore throat, dry cough, hoarse voice, crusting and small nosebleeds, sinus pressure, and blocked ears or ear pain after a cold.

Home care

Simple steps that help most people.

  1. Rinse the nose with salineSaline spray or a saline rinse once or twice a day washes out particles and mucus. Use sterile or boiled-and-cooled water for rinses.
  2. Steam and warm fluidsSteam inhalation and plenty of warm water or soups keep mucus thin and soothe the throat.
  3. Wear a well-fitting mask outdoorsA snug N95-type mask reduces the particles you breathe on high-smog days, especially for morning walks and two-wheeler travel.
  4. Keep the air indoors cleanerAvoid smoking, incense and burning wood or coal indoors. Ventilate when outdoor air is better, usually in the afternoon.
  5. Use medicines sensiblyDecongestant nasal drops should not be used for more than a few days. Do not start antibiotics or steroids on your own; most of these symptoms are not bacterial.
Nosebleeds

If the nose bleeds.

Sit up and lean slightly forward. Pinch the soft part of the nose firmly for 10 minutes without letting go, and breathe through the mouth. Do not tilt the head back. A little petroleum jelly or saline gel inside the nostril helps prevent dryness.

Go to a doctor promptly if

Bleeding does not stop after 20 minutes of pressure, keeps coming back, is heavy, or happens to someone on blood thinners, with high blood pressure, or with a bleeding disorder.

See an ENT

When it is more than the season.

Book an ENT check if the nose stays blocked on one side, sinus pain or discharge lasts beyond 10 days or keeps returning, the voice stays hoarse or the throat sore for more than 3 weeks, there is ear pain with discharge or reduced hearing, or snoring and mouth breathing worsen in a child.

Urgent: go to emergency

Breathlessness or wheeze that is getting worse, difficulty swallowing or opening the mouth, swelling around the eye, high fever with severe headache, or a nosebleed that will not stop.
